<description>Pete, engagement doesn't rub me the way that 'colonisation' does. Colonisation to me has the connotation of exploitation and a top-down shortcut to authentic engagement.

I didn't hear all of the question on the stage so didn't realise that 'colonisation' was a quote from an article.

My own experience is that these social spaces are advertising adverse or sensitive to campaigns. Engage with people, don't 'colonise' spaces.

<description>Mmmm, many would argue colonisation is alive and thriving, just shapeshifted. John Naughten in his Observer column wrote the piece I was referring to, noting the entry of large corporates onto social networks, he predicted that this 'colonisation' would drive away the users. Oxfam is one of the many larger (corporate?) NGOs starting to engage with supporters and campaigners in social networks and I was (am) interested in whether this will be seen as intrusive by people in the spaces to socialise.

<description>Question of the day in terms of contradiction is the guy rom Oxfam talking about 'colonising' social networks. I thought colonisation went out of vogue in the 1960s. The Heart of Darkness goes virtual!
