One thing is for sure - online there is no less but more demand for quality writing then in the off-line world. After all Internet is the ultimate attention economy - and to attract attention you need to know how to write.

This is something I experience myself - as I struggle with the material on Email Overload that I've gathered (together with Phil Jones), with some original ideas and some analysis a bit deeper than in the other articles I've seen online. I would like to build my name on it - but it is not enough to do original thinking or deep analysis - to make any impact in the Internet world you need to write nicely.
